The Skills for Life programme will begin this September in Clare Libraries, with a range of activities and workshops taking place in many libraries over the coming months.

Launch of Skills for Life Programme at Clare Libraries

Skills for Life is a nationwide initiative aimed at equipping individuals with essential skills to navigate modern life.

It will be available across all 30 local authority library services in Ireland and the programme will offer support in: basic digital skills; financial literacy; media literacy; business and employment skills; health awareness; and sustainable lifestyles and environmental awareness. The programme’s core objective is to provide equitable access, across all libraries, to resources, workshops, and training that foster lifelong learning, personal development, and community engagement.

Helen Walsh, Clare County Librarian, said, “The Skills for Life programme is part of the national library strategy, ‘The Library is the place’. Libraries are an essential part of local communities and we are delighted to provide a range of workshops and resources for the public on all these topics.”

As part of the programme, the Harvesting Sustainability Days are a range of workshops that will take place in a number of libraries through the autumn. Workshops will include: beekeeping; honey making; candle making; foraging for wild food; and upcycling clothes. The workshops are free but booking is required as places are limited. The first harvesting sustainability day will take place in Shannon Library on Saturday, September 6 and there will be several harvesting sustainability days in other libraries throughout the autumn.

A Pop-up Literacy event will take place in Kilkee Library on Tuesday, September 9. Cllr Paul Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, will attend on the day to meet a range of local stakeholders including: the LCETB; Youthreach; the HSE; Citizens’ Information; and many more who will provide information and advice. This event also marks International Literacy Day, with this year’s theme being media literacy.

Cllr Paul Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, added, “It is very important that information and events are made available to people in Clare throughout the library network in the county. It means that the everyone in the community has free and equitable access to information on a wide range of topics from IT skills to health awareness, from AI to environmental awareness and much, much more.”
